There are three types of actors in the world. The first is the one who essentially plays his real life self on screen. Tom Cruise, Ashton Kutcher, Samuel L. Jackson are a few that come to mind. As from red carpet to film, there’s not much of a difference. Then there are your actors who completely transform themselves to get into character. Meryl Streep, Anthony Hopkins … you know, the Oscar worthy actors. Then there’s the third category called “Jared Leto”. Yup, the guy is so off the wall that when it comes to getting into character, well, just read the following nine insanely weird things he does and see for yourself…
Gives Bizarre Gifts To Castmates
In his most recent film Suicide Squad, Jared Leto plays the Joker. And unlike Jack Nicholson and heath Ledger who played him masterfully, Jared felt that he had to stay in character during the entire shoot. This means his Castmates were subjected to weird and unusual Joker-like acts of generosity from Leto. Like, he sent Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn a love letter in a box that also included a live black rat. He sent a henchman to drop off a dead hog to Viola Davis, and for Will Smith, an envelope full of bullets. Oh, and he also sent everyone used condoms and anal beads.
But Doesn’t Talk To Them
In an interview with Beats radio 1, Will Smith said that Jared was so in character that they didn’t even speak once to each other when the cameras were off. “I’ve never actually met Jared Leto. We worked together for six months and we’ve never exchanged a word outside of ‘Action!’ and ‘Cut!’ I literally have not met him yet. So, the first time I see him will be ‘Hey, Jared. What’s up?’ He was all in on the Joker,” Says Smith.
He Gives Up Sex
During the filming of Requiem for a Dream, where Jared Leto plays drug addict Harry Goldfarb, he gave up sex during production. For some odd reason Jared decided that he needed to recuperate after the weight he lost to play Harry. What’s more amazing, he was dating the beautifully stunning Cameron Diaz at the time. Now that’s devotion for you, or, just plain stupidity.
… And Lost 25lbs
Also to get into character for Requiem for a Dream, Jared had to lose an astonishing 25-pounds so that he could bring an emaciated drugged-out look to his Harry Goldfarb character. Apparently Jared shed these pounds too quickly, while sustaining an unhealthy weight for too long. Here’s what he told The Independent in an interview:
… And Was Homeless For 2 Weeks
When playing real-life portrayal of a character on screen, some actors will quite literally walk a mile in the person’s shoes just to get a sense of what it’s like to be them. But Jared of course takes this bit of research to the extreme, as for when he was getting into the character of Harry Goldfarb – a drug addict living on the streets of Brooklyn – Jared also tried living on the streets for two weeks. “It was fascinating to get that close to drug addiction, and heartbreaking to see what people go through,” Said Jared in an interview.
He Gave Himself Gout
So Jared goes to extremes to lose weight, but what about gaining it? Well to prepare for his role as Mark David Chapman, the crazed Beatles fan who assassinated John Lennon, Jared packed on 64 pounds of weight in pizza, pasta, and plenty of Häagen-Dazs ice cream topped with – and get this – olive oil and soy sauce for maximum fatness. While Jared was praised for his role, the film flopped. What’s worse because of his fat-gaining diet, Jared gave himself a painful bout of Gout that rendered him in a wheelchair. “It’s a really, it’s a stupid thing to do. I got gout, and my cholesterol went up so fast in such a short time that my doctors wanted to put me on Lipitor, which is for much, much older people. Again, though, a fascinating journey,” Jared told the Guardian in an interview.
…Then Went On A Master Cleanse
So how did Jared recover from playing Mark David Chapman? He went on a Master Cleanse that consists of eating no solid foods for 10 straight days. And now for Jared, cleansing has become his new way of life. “I’ve been fasting ever since. I’ve been doing this very strange, like, lemon and cayenne pepper and water fast. I didn’t eat any food for 10 days straight; I think I lost 20 pounds that first 10 days,” Jared told Jimmy Kimmel on his show.
Directed a Video Via Pseudonym
In case you didn’t know, Jared Leto is also in a music band called 30 Seconds to Mars, and when he decided that the director for the video “The Kill” was, as he put it, “an obnoxious Danish albino named Bartholomew Cubbins.” Leto decided to direct the video himself using the name of a fictitious Dr. Seuss character. “I really wanted people to be able to enjoy and experience the video without having any more preconceived notions or distractions, and just to let it be what it was. It wasn’t important for me to lay claim to it in that way,” Jared said of his directorial decision.
Dropped A Ton Of Weight Again
You’d think after losing 25-pounds to play a drug addict, that that’d be enough skinny character roles for Jared. But to play Rayon, a transgender women in Dallas Buyers, Jared dropped 30. But that’s not all, to stay in character (as Jared always does), he would wax his body from head to toe as part of his strict grooming regiment. “I waxed my legs. Oh yeah, man, I was a pro. I didn’t want that stubble growing back. I waxed my eyebrows, too,” says Jared.
